Inspired by an enchanting tale passed down through generations, mother and son writing team Kabir and Surishtha Sehgal relate the traditional Indian fable of Monkey and his quest for water in their new storybook, A Bucket of Blessings ($16.99, April 29, 2014, Ages 4 – 8, Beach Lane Books/Simon & Schuster).
Accompanied by artist Jing Jing Tsong’s lush illustrations, A Bucket of Blessings helps young children recognize that, as Dr. Maya Angelou expresses in her beautifully crafted Afterword, “it is a blessing to be a blessing.”
In A Bucket of Blessings, Monkey remembers a story his mama told him about peacocks dancing to provoke rain. Setting out with only an empty bucket and a hopeful heart, Monkey is determined to see if his ama’s tale is true. This inspired yet simple narrative gently reminds readers that with perseverance and positive thinking anything is possible.
With a portion of the proceeds being donated to charity: water, (http://www.charitywater.org/), an organization that provides clean drinking water to communities in developing nations, this dynamic mother-son writing duo is continuing their family’s exceptional tradition of storytelling and humanitarianism.
Kabir Sehgal is an author and jazz enthusiast. His books, including A Walk in My Shoes: Conversations Between a Civil Rights Legend and His Godson on the Journey Ahead, which he co-wrote with Andrew Young and Bill Clinton, have been featured on CNN, NPR, and PBS NewsHour.
Surishtha Sehgal is the founder of Mentor Walk, a nonprofit initiative that helps inspire children to stay in school. She was a university professor of psychology for more than twenty-five years and serves on the advisory boards of two universities.
