If your teenager is considering wearing cosmetic contact lenses to complete their Halloween costume or look? While it can take their look to a new level, there are precautions your child needs to take.
Yes, many retail stores and online sites sale cosmetic contacts especially during this season but have you every thought of how safe they are? Buying over-the-counter lens that are not properly fitted by a physician can cause serious risk and/or permanent damage to the health of the eyes.
You may wonder how, but I know. I, myself, wore contact lens for a long time then decided I wanted a non-prescription pair from a online retailer. Mistake #1! I received the lens and soaked them in my normal solution as I always do prior to wearing. They went in just fine like regular contacts but covered the whole eye! (Yes, whole eye) My problem was that within 15 minutes, they started burning my eyes. I had to quickly rush to get them out to stop the pain. Ended up, I had a slight chemical burn from the solution they were in originally in even though I soaked them, it did not remove it.
Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc., manufacturer of ACUVUE Brand Contact Lens reminds us, especially TEENS, how important it is to practice safe contact lens wear and care. Contact Lens should NEVER be bought without a prescription even if they are just for cosmetic use. Around 17% of Americans have worn decorative contact lenses that don't provide vision correction as part of a costume or for other reasons. Of those individuals, 24% purchased them without a prescription.
(she only had them in for 15 mins)
Johnson & Jonson Vision Care, Inc. has some great Do's and Don'ts for safely wearing contacts:
Do:
- Wash your hands with a mild soap and dry with a lint free towel before handling your contact lens.
- Always put your contacts on first before makeup or costume paint. That way there is no transfer of trash onto your lens.
- If you experience any eye discomfort being it tearing, redness, or vision changes, quickly remove the lenses. Promptly contact your eye care professional.
- Always remove, clean and disinfect your lenses according to the schedule that your eye doctor set forth
Don't:
- Don't wear another person's lenses. It is not safe!
- Don't wear for longer that recommended time frame. Unless they are 24 hr lens, never sleep in them.
- Never expose the lenses to water! Water can melt contacts (I know)
- Never use anything except for your recommended solution to lubricate your lenses. Do not put them in your mouth to clean.
