“At the center of this vision is a social movement of art, culture and lifestyle. Incorporating a different charity each month allows all of our members to get involved and discover the power of openhanded giving while simultaneously representing their lifestyle. Together, we can pay it fourward.”
This month, I received the Life Quest shirt by artist Edgar Chaparro. This is a very comfortable shirt and I love that I can layer it with others! This is more information from their site on the artist:
Cheers to a new year! January of 2014 begins with a fresh start and a new face. We welcome Edgar Chaparro as our January designer. This month, he has chosen Life Quest, a community providing mentoring for troubled youth. Want to know why? Check out our interview with Edgar to find out the story behind the designer himself and this month’s design.
How did you start getting involved in art? How did it all begin? Art has always been apart of my life I have been doodling since I can remember. It really all began when I was a kid and became heavily involved with Graffiti as a child. It kept me out of gangs and I was obsessed with seeing my name on everything.
What is your first art-making memory as a kid? I remember being about 8 years old and I tried copying a style of graff that I saw with my name. I made these super corny block letters of my name but I thought it was so fresh. I started throwing it up everywhere.
Why did you choose the charity you did? I grew up in troubled neighborhoods. I’ve seen how the social and economic system swallows the oppressed. I was put in some of the same situations that a lot of the youth in the “ghettos” or “projects” have to survive in. I worked with them directly and have seen the difference that they can make in a kids life. They mentor them while they are locked up and when they get out the provide places for them to go to better themselves. They teach them how to put together such things as resumes and interview.
What makes this charity speak to you? I think often when we think of charity we think their has to be some disaster in a third world country. We think that it has to be the catastrophic circumstance somewhere over the ocean in order to make a difference. And while that is honorable and good we also have to remember that we have people hurting in our very own streets.
What’s ahead for you? Conquering the world…..
Something about you the average person wouldn’t guess. I’ve been homeless
Words to live by: And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. (Luke 9:23)
