Andean Cookies Review

28 September

I am always looking for food that is Gluten Free because of my husband and his diet restrictions. So I was thrilled when I was able to try Andean Dream  Quiona Products. I had recently read about the benefits of  Quinoa and it being called a "super food" even though it is a very ancient grain that has been around for years.

What is Quinoa?
Quinoa [Chenopodium quinoa willd] has been enjoyed as an important food crop in the Andes for more than 6,000 years. More precious than gold, this powerhouse grain has now been rediscovered by the world marketplace because of its' delicious flavor and high nutritional value. Classified as a ‘super crop’ by the United Nations for its' high protein content, quinoa contains a balanced set of essential amino acids, making it an unusually complete food.

Quinoa has been selected by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations as one of the crops that will play an important role in ensuring food security around the world in the 21st century. The National Academy of Sciences of the United States has rated quinoa as the most nourishing grain in the world.

Grown only in the Bolivian Andes, at an altitude of 13,000 feet, Royal Quinoa, which is the particular variety used in Andean Dream products, is the finest quality quinoa in the world. Royal Quinoa has larger seeds which contain more protein and amino acids than other varieties.
Andean Dream makes different quinoa pastas and cookies.  I was excited to try these to see if they were tasty and if they were a good alternative to traditional wheat pastas and cookies for those like my husband who cannot have gluten.  I was sent some of the quinoa fusilli, quinoa macaroni and spaghetti as well as the chocolate chip cookies, coconut cookies, and coffee cookies.

The flavor is surprisingly neutral without being bland. The texture is the stand-out feature of this quinoa pasta. It is extremely flexible and firm, even a bit chewy. It has some bite to it. It wasn't at all sticky or excessively starchy like the other wheat pastas I have gotten in the past. This pasta is a little expensive, even by gluten-free pasta standards. Then again, it's imported from Bolivia so it expected to be a little more pricey.

As for their cookies, well they taste like regular cookies. There is no difference in the taste of them than regular cookies, or at least I thought. The cookies are also individual wrapped in a recyclable material so you can throw a couple in your bag for travel. They are also gluten free, and free from all animal products, including eggs.

If you are looking for "A healthy alternative Snack" then look no further than Andean Dream.
